The forming device is usually the most complicated part of the paper machine. In operation, the power consumption and maintenance cost of the forming device occupy a considerable proportion in the whole paper machine.

The forming of a paper web is a complex process，which can usually be simply regarded as the gradual deposition of fibers onto the web of the forming mesh. To obtain uniform sheet, in addition to need good flow equipment, also need to make paper material reasonable dehydration process in forming surface. In general, the fibers can be dispersed evenly by controlling the difference between the speed of the network and the speed of the pulp, and by selecting the appropriate dewatering element.

After forming, the wet paper generally needs to be dried by forced dehydration (vacuum suction, press, etc.) to achieve certain dryness or humidity so that it can be stripped off the web.
